Can’t-Miss Beach Vacation Photo Tips

1) Packing the Right Equipment

When you pack for your dream beach vacation, remember these essential items: Camera, batteries, memory cards, camera case, battery chargers, external flash (if available), tripod, and portable digital storage device. If you have an abundance of memory, you can leave the storage device at home.

2) Consider These Purchases

I know… you’re already spending more than you want to on the vacation. So the last thing you want is some stranger suggesting you spend more on photo accessories. But, read on and find out what these low cost accessories will do for you before you skip to Tip #3.

Consider purchasing a circular polarizer filter for your lens. STRONGLY consider it! It will be one of the least expensive accessories you can buy, and you will LOVE the results. What are the results? A bluer sky, the ability to see objects under water, and creating colors that will “pop” off the page.

3) Insurance

Do you have insurance on your possessions? Did your camera cost more than $25.00? Then do yourself a big favor and buy a UV filter to place over your lens for protection. If your lens becomes damaged, your camera is ruined. You can probably get a good UV filter for under $20.00.

4) The Magical Landscape Shot

If there are colorful bluffs, harbors, or other landscape picture opportunities on your beach vacation, you want to capture them, of course. Not only that, but wouldn't it also be impressive to add some family member(s) to the shot and have the people AND the background in focus?

Set your F-stop for a high number (at least F-11, or at the "infinity" or "landscape" setting of your camera). Position the people in the foreground, the landscape in the background. Focus on your human subject(s), while being at least 15 feet away (25 is even better, if you have a telephoto).

Adjust the circular polarizer filter to obtain the desired shade of blue in the sky. Skip this step if you didn’t purchase a filter. Don’t worry, though. If you don’t like the vividness of the sky after the print is developed, you can always take out a magic marker and color the sky. (You didn’t hear that from me.)

Finally, gently squeeze the shutter and… voila! A perfect “postcard” photograph.

5) Silhouettes

Silhouette beach vacation pictures (or, non-beach vacation pictures for that matter) produce one of the most artistic and/or emotional-looking photographs possible. Most people never take silhouette photographs, and yet, they are just as easy as photographs taken during the day light.

The best time to take silhouette photos is from approximately 1 hour before sunset, to ½ hour after sunset. Use evaluative or matrix metering (which is probably your default metering mode anyway), and focus on the HUMAN SUBJECTS, with plenty of the cloud-filled sky in the background. Then compose the shot, as desired.

Did I mention that sunset shots without clouds are fairly disappointing? Sort of like winning the lottery and losing the ticket.

The silhouette effect results from the camera thinking the overall scene is brighter than it is, and therefore under-exposes the dark areas (human subjects).

Using Sunblock

Some people, especially those with fair skin, red or blond hair or blue eyes, are more susceptible to sunburn than others, but everyone should take precautions when they're on the beach or on the water.

If you are among those likely to burn, use a sunblock with a PF of 15 or greater. You can use a lower number if you are less likely to burn. An ounce of sunblock will effectively cover your entire body.

Apply sunblock at least 15 to 30 minutes before venturing out into the sun and re-apply at least every hour. Re-apply more often if you are perspiring heavily or swimming.

Use sunblocks with higher PFs on areas that need extra protection like the tip of your nose, your ears, your collarbone, the tops of your feet, and your shoulders.

Do not use sunblock on your lips. Instead, use only sun protection products designed specifically for lips.

Keep all sunblock and sun medications away from your eyes.

5 Tips for Your Best Summer Beach Experience

Going to the shore this summer? If you're heading to a sandy coast, you might want to do more than lie on a towel or practice your doggy paddle. On the sand or in the water, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the ocean, from shelling to snorkeling to surfing. Here are our top tips for a fun-filled day at the beach.

Under the Sea

Snorkeling is one of the easiest and most accessible ways to experience the underwater world. You can rent or buy inexpensive gear near popular clear-water spots.

Choose a location where lifeguards are present, and ask the lifeguard about conditions before getting in the water. Plan your entry and exit points prior to getting in the water. Swim into the current on entering and then ride the current back to your exit point. Pop your head above the water periodically to ensure you aren’t drifting too far out, or near rocks. Wear a rash guard; it will keep you from being fried by the sun. It's best to snorkel with a buddy and stay together—this is safer, and you'll have someone to point out that colorful fish.

Think of the ocean as someone else’s home—don’t take anything that doesn’t belong to you, or leave any trash behind. Don’t touch any ocean creatures; they may reveal hidden stingers. Do not bump against or step on coral—touching it can kill the delicate creatures that reside within the hard shell. Coral reefs grow only an inch or two a year.

Catching a Wave

Even if you don't have a surf board, you can still ride the ocean's waves.

The technique for catching waves is the same with or without a board. Swim out to where the swell is just beginning to break, and position yourself toward shore. When the next wave comes, lie on your board (if you have one), kick like crazy, and catch it! You’ll feel the push of the wave as you glide in front of the gurgling, foamy surf.

When body surfing, put your arms over your head, bring your index fingers together (so you look like the letter "A"), and stiffen your body like a board to achieve the same effect. If you don’t like to swim too far out, stick with body boarding and body surfing close to shore. Shore break (if it isn’t too steep) can be exhilarating to ride.

You’ll know it’s too steep if you hear the sound of slapping when the waves hit the sand. You’re looking for waves that curl over and break farther out, then roll, not slap onto the sand. Always watch first to make sure the conditions aren’t too strong.

Searching for Shells

The reasons people shell are as varied as the shellers themselves. You might collect simply for the fun of discovery, for displaying, or for use in gardens or crafts.

Veteran shell-seekers go out before the sun rises so they can be the first on the beach after a storm or night of high tide (Storms and cold fronts bring in the best catches). Most shellers use a bag to collect their finds.

Once you're ready to pack shells for transit, wash them thoroughly to remove sand and debris. Then wrap fragile species such as sand dollars and sea urchins in tissue paper or cotton, then newspaper. Last, place your shells in a cardboard or plastic box. To display them, restore the shell's luster by brushing it with baby oil.

Safety in the Surf

Beautiful beaches can be dangerous at times due to large waves and strong currents—so much so that many beaches rate wave hazards using colored signs. Ask a lifeguard what level of caution each color indicates.

Visiting beaches with lifeguards is recommended, and you should swim only when there’s a normal caution rating. Never swim alone or dive into unknown water or shallow breaking waves. If you’re unable to swim out of a rip current, tread water and wave your arms in the air to signal for help.

Even in calm conditions, there are other dangerous things in the water to be aware of, including razor-sharp coral, jellyfish, eels, and sharks. Jellyfish cause the most ocean injuries. Reactions to a sting are usually mild (burning sensation, redness); however, in some cases they can be severe (breathing difficulties). If you are stung, pick off the tentacles, rinse the affected area with water, and apply ice. Seek first aid from a lifeguard if you experience severe reactions. The chances of getting bitten by a shark are very low, but to be safe avoid swimming at dawn, dusk, and night, and stay out of places with murky water, harbor entrances, or steep drop-offs.

Respect the Sun

The sun is particularly strong in the summer, and beach visitors should take extra precaution to avoid sunburns and long-term cancer risks due to sun exposure.

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Cover areas that are most prone to burning like your nose, shoulders, tops of feet, and ears. And don’t forget to use sun-protection products on your lips. You should apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before you plan to be outdoors and reapply every two hours, even on cloudy days. Clouds scatter sunlight, so you can still burn on an overcast day.

Wear light, protective clothing, such as a long-sleeve shirt and pants, broad-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Stay in the shade whenever possible— especially on the beach—by using an umbrella. Remember that sand and water can reflect up to 85% of the sun’s damaging rays.

Children need extra protection from the sun. Apply sunscreen frequently and liberally on children over six months of age and minimize their time in the sun. Sunscreen is not recommended for children under six months.

For example, if the heat is too much and can hardly stand it, follow these tips:

1.- Wear lightweight and clear colors. This type of solar energy repels color. Also a good idea to wear a cap, hat or protected with an umbrella.

2.-Carry water or juice and drink often, though not thirsty. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, because they dry.

3.- Do not eat protein-rich foods because they increase body heat.

4.- On the beach and under the sun, do not perform activities requiring energy. If you want to do strenuous work, try it during the coolest hours of the day, usually between 4 and 7 in the morning. AND INTHE WATER

5.-Always swim with someone, never alone and operate in areas under surveillance.

6.-Follow all rules and signals

7.- Do not mix alcohol and swimming. Alcohol alters the trial balance and coordination as well as their ability to swim and dive.

8.- Pay attention to the state and weather

9.- Learn how to prevent, recognize and react to an emergency.

The History behind Cozumel's Carnival!!

More Than 135 Years of Tradition!

We are proud to say that our Cozumel Carnival is the oldest on the Yucatan Peninsula and perhaps in the whole country of Mexico. According to Merida Magazine published on March 30th and April 20th of 1876 by Mr. Nestor Rubio Alpuche, Cozumel introduced its first Carnival that year. By oral history we know that in 1896 parades in Carnival dresses and costumes, the “Dance of the Ribbons”, and the wooden bull “Huacax-ché" appeared. In 1904 for the first time Don Manuel Vivas Martin, along with a local baker by the name of Pérez organized a masquerade, where the protagonists were depicted as blacks and the women’s roles were all played by men.

A bit before the 1920’s a recent arrival from Tabasco to the island named Don Félix González Bonastre developed parties, organized student participation and ballads, and other critical social events during Carnival. Since then, masquerades are enthusiastically embraced by attendees and have become a part of the tradition. In the mid- 1940’s women began to participate, starting with Doña Elia Flores de González. During the 1970’s the Carnival celebration entered a crisis and the beautiful fiesta became degenerate and monotonous and featured graffiti and violence. In 1975 the local City government took control of the activities and the fiesta gained new momentum and little by little reached new heights of popularity among the population.

With the enthusiasm of the municipal leaders, Germán Garcia Padilla (1975-78), Antonio González Fernandez (1978-81) and local personalities such as Adolfo Gracia Aguilar and Sra. Carolina Hernández de Joaquín and Professor Isabel Solís Vera, the Carnival celebration was revived. The celebration has year to year become a huge fiesta for the people and families of the island providing a healthy diversion filled with glamour. And we believe it is the best Carnival in the state of Quintana Roo.

The famous carnival has been taking place on Cozumel island for more than a century, filling the island with colour and inviting locals and visitors to have fun for a whole week. It is a family fiesta that the islanders have been carrying out for generations and is one of the most traditional public celebrations.

BEACH VACATION WITH KIDS!! Great Tips!

The whole family is ready and excited, the vacations are booked, the bags are packed, and your beach vacation in Cozumel with your kids seems to be about to start! But before you leave make sure you're really prepared. The ocean is a great family-friendly location, but it can quickly become dangerous if you're not careful, and you don't want to take any chances with your precious little ones.

The More SPF, the Merrier

Sun protection is the most important thing to keep in mind when planning. Protect your kids from the sun with high-SPF sunscreen; many child-specific brands out there have high SPF and special formulations that are designed especially for children's sensitive skin. If you're bringing a baby, basic sunscreen is not enough! Keep baby fully covered in protective clothing, rimmed hats, sunglasses, and preferably under a tent or umbrella. Pack sunglasses and hats for older kids, too. Your child may not want to wear these into the water, but they're great for time spent building sandcastles, collecting seashells, or munching on midday snacks. Also, an umbrella provides a perfect home base when the kids need a break - not to mention a perfect place for you to relax while you keep an eye on them.

Lifeguards Shouldn't Replace Mom or Dad

Your kids need to be supervised the whole time you're at the beach, and you need to be the one watching out for them. Another adult in your group can take over, but someone you know - and who agrees to the responsibility - needs to be on hand and actively supervising the kids at all times. Lifeguards and other parents are not responsible for your kids, and you shouldn't act as though they should be. If you would rather play around yourself or you don't want to tote around the kids, hire a babysitter or ask a friend or family member to help. Whatever you do, don't drop the kids off to fend for themselves. The potential dangers are just too many and too great.

A Shore Thing

Bring flotation devices (like water wings and boogie boards) but don't rely on them. If your kid can't swim, accompany him or her into the water and stick to the shallowest parts. Even if everyone in your family can swim, encourage everybody to stay close to shore. Tell adventurous kids who want to swim a longer distance to swim parallel to the shore; that way, they can still have fun but not be tempted to go into deep water. Also, some beaches will let you borrow, or rent for a small fee, life jackets for your kids; this is a good idea regardless of whether or not they can swim.

No Diving Allowed

Finally, never let your children dive into the ocean (and don't do it yourself, either). It's generally too shallow in places where the kids can go, and even if it isn't shallow, it isn't transparent enough for you to see the bottom. It's likely to have rocks, shells, sand and any number of things that will hurt your child's head at best or knock your child unconscious at worst. Teach your kids to never turn their backs to the ocean or they'll risk an unexpected wave crashing into them, which can be uncomfortable and dangerous.

Free Toys (from Mother Nature)

Bring basic toys and keep it simple. Plan for sandcastles and other simple entertainments (collect shells with holes to make necklaces, perfect souvenirs from a trip to the beach) rather than investing in expensive gadgets kids will play with once and then ignore.

Aim for Comfy Clothes and Comfy Weather

Visit during early morning or late afternoon if possible - midday heat and sun are more likely to cause sunburn or dehydration, increase the risk of sunstroke, and wear out your kids (making them tired and cranky)! Wear flip-flops or sandals or other footwear on the beach and on your way to the beach, so your kids don't burn their sensitive feet on uncomfortably hot sand or hurt themselves on broken glass left by inconsiderate beach-goers. Bring extra clothes in a closed plastic bag to change into after the beach and you won't have to be cold and wet on the way home. Some beaches also have showers where you can all wash the salt and sand off, which will protect sensitive skin from irritation.

Don't Go Hungry or Thirsty

Bring water and make sure your kids drink up. Stay hydrated! Dehydration can make you and your kids cranky, and at worst it can seriously threaten your health. Also, bring a cooler full of snacks. Swimming is exhausting work, and playing around under the sun can take a lot out of you. If you keep your kids well-fed, they'll be happier - and you'll be prepared in case you run into traffic getting back in time for dinner. Just make sure you keep trash to a minimum and that any trash you bring to the beach goes home with you in the cooler.

As long as you plan your trip properly ahead of time, you're sure to have a safe, healthy, fun vacation to the beach with your kids. The extra work is worth it for the peace of mind it gives you.

The island has quite special geological, lithological and structural characteristics, originating highly permeable subterranean calcareous aquifers, in contact with sea water and fresh water.

These subterranean rivers are underwater cave passages under the limestone terrain formed in the tertiary period (50 million years ago), during those times a chemical process which involves the water from the rain and carbon dioxide immediately start dissolving the limestone, creating long and deep passages in the solution caves of Cozumel. All these interesting and unique formations inside this underwater caves and caverns have completely another mechanism to be formed, the surface water filtrates in fissures into the earth and pull all the minerals dissolved in the limestone producing a very rich concentration of minerals in the vertical flowing water reaching some of the main galleries producing incredible speleothemes.

In the last glacial age about twelve thousand years ago, the water in the planet descent more than 90 meters from the actual sea level, this effect produce in many cave rooms the formation of speleothemes (stalactites, stalagmites and columns) by a dripping action of minerals dissolved in the water such as calcium carbonate and dolomite.

The Cenotes of Cozumel are unique also in the biological and cultural context, the explorer or just the recreational diver under the supervision of a qualified underwater cave guide, has the opportunity to enjoy prehispanic Mayan remains offering to the god Ixchel.

IRONMAN COZUMEL

Just an IRONMAN can conquer this island, however Cozumel conquered them all.

Beaches, sun, music and a great competition! More than just a sports event, Ironman Cozumel is a feast! People all over the world gather in this beautiful island, not only to watch some of your favorite ironmen, but because this is one of the best vacation destinations in the world, the people of this island make visitors feel as if they were at home as they participate during the event or as they support the competitors.

On November 29th, 2009 the island of Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico hosted for the first time this great event with 1500 competing triathletes who swam 3.8 kilometers, traveled 180 kilometers by bike and completed a 42.2 mile run, around the unique nature of this paradise island.

The Ironman took place fo the first time in 1978 due to a group of Marines who wanted to know who was the best athlete, a commander named "Collins” suggested that the best way to find the best athelete, was to combine these three disciplines, swimming, running and bicycling. The first one to finish the whole race would be recognized as a true iron man. Now in Cozumel, these competitions are held among hundreds of athletes that earn ratings for the next Ironman competition in Hawaii.

Before departing athletes prepare, you can feel the adrenaline and tension in the atmosphere, as the real journey is about to begin. The launching siren is heard while everyone encourages the competitors. During the triathlon volunteers, paramedics along with public safety care for the participants and provide them with thirst-quenching sports drinks.

The end of the trail is located across from City Hall and those who wished the best to the athletes now wait anxiously for their arrival at the goal line.

You are an IRONMAN! Are the words of the host of the event who welcomes all those who meet the goal line of this tough competition. In 2009 the Belgian Rutger Beke took first place in the men's cateory and Yvonne Van Vlerken on the female.

Celebrating the Day of the Dead on November 1st & 2nd

Candles, flowers, sweets, bread and hot chocolate are some of the main ingredients of the Dead altar. Each year Mexico celebrates the “Day of the Dead ", a date on which the homes across the country make an offering to those who have gone beyond and visit those places that the living used to live in. In each region there is a particular way of preparing the altar, generally using the food and customs of each place.

The altars range from a simple table home to small houses made of logs with thatched tissue, placed at the entrance ash and candles as the belief that serves to guide the dead to the altar.

In Cozumel during this time you can see and feel the atmosphere on the island, homes, schools, hotels, restaurants and even parks are drawn from the most elaborated altars and ornates, to the simplest but equally beautiful memoirs. COZUMEL celebrated with tamales, seafood, the famous tequila "xtabentum", and other regional exquisiteness from this beautiful Mexican Caribbean Island.

Among the inhabitants of Cozumel, one of the favorite things is the "bread of the dead" ia sweet bread flavored with vanilla and orange, which is accompanied by the traditional hot chocolate, with hand-made cocoa and served in mud or "gourd" containers.
In addition to food and beverages, the day of the death is as well celebrated with folkloric dances mostly pre-Hispanic, in which the dancers paint their faces simulating skulls, black capes are used with ornaments and headdresses made of feathers. These traditions are as old as the early civilizations of Mexico, including the Maya.

Ornaments made from paper images are worn by buildings throughout the city. Images of skulls and photographs of dead celebrities are as well portrayed, the living can also read or hear in some places the famous “calaveritas”, which are humorous sometimes even sarcastic verses using satire and usually mentioning celebrities, politicians and artists, these poems refer to the characters as if they were already dead or end up referring to how death takes them away.

There are many popular stories which tell how some people have had experience listening to, or watching the dead, such as the famous story of the man who would not prepare the altar to their dead relatives and dreamt how the spirit of his relatives came from the far and beyond, but had no where to go because nobody had prepared their altar.

From the food to the dances, from the ornaments to the popular myths and legends, as the wind blows in these times celebrating the deceased; you can feel the atmosphere of the festivities.
